A VISION FOR CULTURAL RETENTION
We the Storytellers at Ananse Sound Splash 2012 hereby establish the International Ananse Movement, I AM.
I AM comes of the deep desire to work to give recognition and visibility to our indigenous cultural arts. The I AM takes its name from the Spider-god of the Akan people of Ghana. This figure has survived in stories across many areas of the African diaspora, and is eminently qualified to be the symbol of African cultural retention.
The Movement however will also be inclusive of other indigenous forms that have survived in stories, in songs, in chants, and in our unique drum rhythms.
The I AM recognizes that if our people have nothing to claim then they have nothing to defend. The era of cultural suppression and cultural marginalization, which has been a factor in the history of so many of the world’s indigenous peoples, must come to an end.
